George Jones' deep connection to agriculture was rooted in his upbringing and shaped by a lifetime of achievements. From his early days as a dedicated 4-H member to his influential roles in academia and animal welfare, Jones championed agricultural education and advocacy with unwavering passion.
His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leon Jones, were both intensely involved in the Hanover 4-H Club. Their influence led to Jones’s own ten-year career, during which he showed at Eastern States Exposition through the Hanover 4-H Sheep Club. As a part of the 4-H livestock demonstration, he represented New England at the National 4-H Club Congress in Chicago, Ill. He was also part of the Plymouth County Livestock Judging Team. In 1949, Jones was recognized as an outstanding sheep club member from Massachusetts.
After graduating from Hanover High School, Jones enrolled at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Throughout his schooling, he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. During his undergraduate years, he served on the committee for the Little International Livestock Show as well as the Bay State Dairy Classic. In 1953, he was on the University’s dairy judging team. In 1954, he was vice president of his class, on the University’s livestock judging team and won the Rhineheart trophy for individual excellence in livestock judging.
During his senior year, Jones won the Bowditch speaking contest through the University’s Stockbridge School of Agriculture, was included in the American Colleges’ “Who’s Who,” became business manager of the yearbook and was selected as “Man of the Year” within the class of 1955. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in animal husbandry.
Soon after graduation, Jones was appointed Associate 4-H Club Agent by the trustees of Plymouth County Aid to Agriculture. He was consistently called into positions of leadership throughout his career, first working at his alma mater, the University of Massachusetts Amherst, then as assistant to the vice president at Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Boston, Mass.
